Domain Hacking

First of all what I am going to discuss here is not illegal

Just because this term contains the word hacking it doesn’t mean we are going to break into someone’s computer here the word hack or hacking is to considered as a clever trick (purely ethical)

The domain names we have today were introduced in 1983, now you must be wandering what were we using before that

Before the introduction of domain names we used to remember a long string of funny numbers called as IP addresses and if we wanted to visit any site let’s say google then instead of typing www.google .com we had to type

That was just a small introduction to domain names, let us come back to the point

The internet is rowing everyday

At this moment there are some hundred million websites on the web

Each one has its domain name

You want to start your website

You have a really awesome name in your mind which you are going to give to your site

You go to any domain registrar

Search for the domain name you wish to have

And WTF! Someone already has that

This thing will surely blow your mind, you need to think of any other name which means all the plans you made for your site using that name will now be changed a bit

Today this incident is quite common because there are millions of websites and it is quite possible that someone else also had the same idea like yours but he registered the domain before you

But what if you want that name only?

You would either try to buy that domain if it is up for an auction or you will drop that name and start brainstorming other names

In the case of Inside Tech Tricks I had to drop the previous idea because at that time I didn’t had a thousand dollars to spend on purchasing a domain luckily, no-one else had this name already registered and I got www.insidetechtricks.com

Now there is small tweak to help you out in getting your favorite domain in this huge crowd of common domain names

That tweak is called a domain hack and according to Wikipedia it is defined as

A domain hack is an unconventional domain name that combines domain levels, especially the top-level domain (TLD), to spell out the full “name” or title of the domain.[1] Examples include del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us/), goo.gl (http://goo.gl/) and fold.it (http://fold.it/). In this context, the word hack denotes a clever trick (as in programming), not an exploit or break-in (as in security).

Similarly you can also get your domain registered with such extensions

If you domain name ends with  “ag” then you can register a domain like “newsm.ag” which is also a trend now a days,

Delicious, post.it, goo.gl, dlvr.it and other giants used this tweak so why can’t you?

And let tell you there are a lot of extensions you can get for your domain and all are country specific so you would need to work on your SEO and marketing if you are going to target global audience

What do I mean?

I mean to say that, if you are using the “.in” extension as a domain name which is country specific domain (geographical domain) for India then your target audience automatically becomes Indians and search engines will send you more traffic from India so you will have to optimize your site to reach your target audience

Yeah, so let me start with the core of the topic,

Now when you know about domain hacking I think you should also know about the extensions which can be used for domain hacking

Here is the table which lists the extension and what the extension stands for

NOTE: I’ve not added domains like .com, .org, .net or .edu because they are quite popular and everyone knows about them
