Many people say it is impossible to create a folder named CON in windows, earlier i also thought this way. here is my personal story on this post
Once one of my friends who is also a lot involved in same kind of computer stuff challenged me to create a folder named CON in my windows operating system, and i accepted that challenge. I tried to do that and ended up with the same error message- Invalid Directory.
that time i broke the rules, i created the folder in my JAVA based cellphone and after that copied it to my windows machine.
When i told my friend about how i made the folder he told me the trick to create that folder in windows. today i am going to share that trick with all of you.
First of all you should know that why windows doesn’t allow to create a folder named CON, the reason is that CON and many other words are reserved keywords by DOS. other names which you can’t set as a folder name are
PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.and many others.
Now these keyword have their own function too, which you should know for your general knowledge about the windows operating system
CON Key board and display.
PRN system list device, usually a parallel port.
AUX Auxiliary Device , usually a serial port.
CLOCK$ system real-time clock.
NUL Bit-bucket device.
A: – Z: drive letters.
COM1 First serial communication port.
LPT1 First parallel printer port.
LPT2 Second Parallel printer port.
LPT3 Third Parallel printer port.
COM2 Second serial communication port.
COM3 Third serial communication port.
COM4 Fourth serial communication port.
Now you think we can’t create a folder with any of these names, but we can. just follow these simple steps
open command prompt
type in the following text
This will create a folder named CON in drive D, If you wish you can change the drive letter by any drive where you want to create the folder and CON with any of the above keywords with which you want to create a folder.
To delete this folder simply replace MD by RD in the above command.
NOTE: Don’t try this on your system because it might become unstable and if you really want to show off your geeky knowledge in front of your friends then don’t create it in the drive where you have installed your windows operating system.
